Translation
Translation is the written rendering of a text in another language.
Aside from the obvious language proficiency, translation requires a thorough understanding of both cultures involved and the related values as well as expertise in the subject matter. Indeed, it’s not enough to ‘speak two languages’.
Transcreation
The adaptation of advertising or marketing copy for a foreign-speaking market.
As a result, it goes beyond translation as it involves capturing the initial message and its effect in the source culture with the aim of recreating it. Indeed, you need to persuade and engage the target audience, therefore, it requires precise knowledge of the local market.
Proofreading
The review of a text to correct grammatical, spelling and careless mistakes and typing errors. Serious translators should always work with a proofreader. Personally, my trusted colleague is also specialised in the museum and art industry. As a result, the work we create is always of optimal quality.
Revision
The review of a text to correct grammatical, spelling mistakes
and typing errors as well as inadequacies in the tone and register of the text.
In fact, revision can involve reworking and rewording the text.

Conference interpreting
Usually in a sound-proof booth separated from the meeting, but nowadays very often remotely, the interpreters listen to and render simultaneously the speaker’s message and intentions by means of a headset and a microphone. There are usually two interpreters per team, sometimes three in large institutions such as the EU or the UN.
In order to hear the interpreters, the meeting participants listen to the audio feed through multi-channel receivers (or nowadays, through selecting the channel of their choice on Zoom or Teams).
Consecutive interpreting
Usually positioned beside the speaker during a meeting, the interpreter listens to their speech while taking notes. Then, he renders the intervention or the chunk of speech in the other language after the speaker stops speaking. On the one hand, this technique takes up more time than simultaneous interpreting, but on the other hand, it requires no specific equipment.
Thus, it is suitable for large-scale or medium-sized settings. However, this exercise is extremely tiresome. Make sure you provide your interpreter with enough breaks.
Tour guide interpreting
Typically used during gallery tours or for simultaneous interpreting without booths. The interpreter, ideally located close to the speaker, transmits the message simultaneously into a microphone linked to the audience’s headsets.
As you rightly guess, this requires a tour-guide system and is suitable in medium to small-sized settings. For example, during guided tours for your museum.
Whispered interpreting
The interpreter renders speech simultaneously by whispering in the ear of the person requiring interpretation or speaking in a low voice for a small group.
No equipment required, suitable in any setting for groups of three people maximum.

The subtitler is given a video file or a full movie feature, adds time-codes by means of a software and translates the speech in the video file from one language to the other, according to guidelines that are specific to translation meant for screen.
Indeed, there are many parameters that the subtitler has to consider. For example, does the video need plain speech subtitles or SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing)?
Transcription
The transcriber is given an audio or video file and creates a written version of what is said in the file in the same language.
